During the Jim Crow and Post Jim Crow Periods, Dr. Charlie H. Hill was a FWB African American Educator, Basketball Coach, First Baseman on the First FWB African American Baseball team, Civic Activist and Real Estate Investor. He was the first black to hold political office in Ft Walton Beach, Florida. He worked as a teacher, principal and attendance coordinator for the Okaloosa County School District. He served as principal at Brook Elementary School and Combs Hight School From 1953 to 1968.

Most of those years were before county schools were integrated in 1964. He was elected to Ft Walton Beach City Council in 1973 and served two (2) terms. At the time of his death, he was doing part-time consulting work and serving on the Okaloosa-Walton County College Board of Trustees.

Dr. Charlies H, Hill lived in the FWB Mid-town area on Washington Ave (21 McGriff Street NE) with his late wife Albert “Bert” Alston Hill and their three children, Charlie “Chuck” Hill, Jr, Wanda “Ben” Hill Seals and Warren Alston Hill. The Hill’s family are currently the largest FWB African American family real estate property owners in FWB Mid-town area. The properties are currently own and managed by his youngest son Warren Hill and daughter Wanda “Ben” Hill Seals.

Mrs. Hill was educated in the Putnam County School District in Palatka, Fla. She furthered her education in Tallahassee, Florida at the Florida A&M University where she earned a degree in nursing. After completing her education she joined her husband in Ft. Walton Beach where she became the first African American registered nurse at the Old Ft. Walton Beach Hospital (Wilson and White).

In 1960 “Bert” dedicated her life to Jehovah God and was a zealous witness for 57 years , most of those years were spent as a full time Pioneer. She helped many to learn and accept the truth of God’s Word. She was generous with her time and resources to help those in need. She loved God, his word the Bible and read it daily!

Warren Alston Hill is the third and youngest child of the late Charlie H. Hill and Albert “Bert” Alston Hill. He started his education at Brooks Elementary School and graduated from Ft Walton Beach High School in 1973. After graduating, he attended numerous seminars and workshops on public speaking in the New York City area. As a public speaker, Warren has had to privilege to peak on subjects that encourage and promote strong family values.

He has traveled to Greece, Poland, London, South Africa, the Holy land and South America. His travels has enhanced his understanding and appreciation for other cultures.

As he shared with his late father, Warren has spent a life time enjoying fishing and hunting. He own a boat for fishing and boating enjoyment.

Warren has been married for over 36 years. He and his wife Hattie reside in the FWB Mid-town area where he runs a small family business and manage the Hill’s Family real estate investments. They are the proud parents of two children, Kristen and Jeremy and the proud grandparents of three.

Both Dr. Charlie H. Hill and his brother Dr. James L. Hill Sr. were Okaloosa County Public Schools Educators and Leaders. Dr. James Hill was a longtime resident of Okaloosa County and retired as the Principal of Florosa Elementary School in 1994. He also retired as Colonel in 1981 in the Active Reserve. Colonel Hill proudly served the country during both WWII and the Korean Conflict.

Charlie Hill Terrace was named in honor of Charlie Hill by the Ft Walton Beach Housing Authority and Hill Avenue NW was also named in his honor.

Dr. Charlie H. Hill died July 27, 1990, age 63 and his wife Mrs. Alberta Hill died May 31, 2017 at Sacred Heart Hospital San Destin, Florida.
